Background
Sonia began her academic life in medical science research. Her PhD performed at the University of Adelaide focused on a receptor tyrosine kinase involved in leukaemia. Afterward, she worked in a clinical research group at the Hanson Institute where she investigated the mechanisms contributing to the development and progression of leukaemia. Whilst travelling overseas, Sonia developed an appreciation of the social determinants of health which inspired her to study towards a graduate certificate of primary health care at Flinders University.
In 2008, she commenced at the Key Centre to manage an NHMRC funded early parenting study (REPIT) with Associate Professor Jane Fisher and Dr Heather Rowe. This project aims to determine the efficacy of residential early parenting centres in treating postnatal distress and unsettled infant behaviour and further investigates the health services and support networks used by mothers with young infants.
